S Band EJ gives seismic updates at your desk

Considering the general threat of impending earthquake that pervades Japan, we’re surprised that we don’t come across more seismic-themed gadgets, despite the presence of more basic devices like the Gragraph.

For those with more specific information in mind, Sankosha has come up with this sleek little seismograph, the S Band EJ, that can not only tell you the level of the quake at your location and at the epicenter but also predict when and to what degree the shocks of a distant quake are likely to reach you.

It also tunes into the S-band disaster service broadcast so you can scoop the TV and keep up to date with all the catastrophic news around the country. Hook the S Band EJ up to a computer network and all network users will receive alerts.

Unfortunately for those of us that were already imagining this by the bedside table, the ¥420,000 ($4,200) price tag means that it’s intended for use in a professional setting.
