Curry and champagne suds for the tub

As the first few cool fall days herald the approach of winter, it is time to start dreaming of—and marketing—the idea of a hot bath. Each year we see a number of new novelty bath products hit the shelves, with last year’s big trend being items designed to resemble food. So far this year, two new products have caught our eye that also work the food angle, but not so much in the packaging as what they do to the bath water.

Bandai has come out with Curry Bath Powder, a dissolvable powder reminiscent of a curry roux cube and packaged accordingly. Such curry starter kits, the base of a simple home cooked dinner, are common fixtures on Japanese supermarket shelves.

The series includes four varieties—sweet, hot, very, hot, and white stew—that promise to turn your bath water the corresponding color. Not quite as gross at is sounds, the scents draw on the more bath-appropriate ingredients found in curry such as ginger, honey, and milk, plus red pepper extract. With the high gimick value of the Curry Bath Powder, Bandai is looking to follow up on their success earlier this year with the ¥10,000 note bath Bubble Money.

Meanwhile from Tokyo Service comes the elaborately titled, “Delicious Sweets Bath: Pink Gold Champagne Strawberry Garnish,” foaming bath powder. Upon dissolving, the pinkish-red egg makes a fizzing champagne-hitting-the-glass sound while chardonnay and strawberry extracts lend an authentic aroma.

The new champagne variety joins existing flavors such as New York Cheesecake and Mango Yogurt.
