"I think it is shameful that we feel thankful that Japan was “nicer” to us than to China and Korea who fought to remain free."

That's interesting because Taiwan was China's Territory and China signed it over to Japan! So I guess China didn't fight hard enough to remain free since they GAVE AWAY part of their country to Japan?

Interesting to read the comments above. Taiwan might be imitating Japan and experiencing an identity crisis, so is China in my opinion. I lived there and as a university teacher I was able to observe trends that were either American or Japanese. Japanese animation, music and clothing were in vogue as well as Western versions of it. I don't think Taiwan should be singled out as "imitating" Japan. I think the whole world is ongoing an identity crisis. Nowadays the media sells us an idea of beauty, a lifestyle, etc, etc and many of us, specially youth buy into it. Here in the UK, in Latin American countries, in Taiwan, in China. Trying to be better, appear modern, more sophisticated is nothing new, it is a natural trait in humans.

All i have to say is well done Taiwan for being an inclusive country where Eastern culture intermingles resulting in such beautiful and interesting variety.

Honestly, I have to say Taiwan is really having some hell of an identity crisis; everyone adores and strives to be Japanese in every possible way, despite of the fact that Japan killed many many Taiwanese people who tried to protect Taiwan as their own land. I think it is shameful that we feel thankful that Japan was "nicer" to us than to China and Korea who fought to remain free.

Well, technically Taiwan was China back then in the sense that the ROC when the ROC controlled mainland and Taiwan but that all ended when the Communist fought the ROC and won and the ROC was forced to flee to Taiwan. My grandmother lived in Taiwan during the time Japan was in control and only had good things to say about it and even married a Japanese man, my grandfather. I love both the Taiwanese culture and the Japanese culture.

Korea and China fought back because they were invaded by Japan. Taiwan was signed over to Japan in a treaty so it wasn't actually invaded now was it?
