Marlboro and Georgia coffee POS mashup

If delivery drivers, office managers, and exam-stressing students around the world agree on anything it must be pretty universal: Is there any more of a classic FMCG combo than cigarettes and coffee?

Typically people who like cigarettes like coffee as well (less so the other way), but branding fears in the West keep them from being marketed together. Not in Japan of course.

This promotion through Seven 11 convenience stores in Japan offers a free can of coffee with a pack of Marlboro Wides, though Georgia’s involvement on the coffee end is unclear (the box isn’t branded for Georgia).

Either way, collaborations between tobacco companies and other producers is not new, and has spawned some pretty creative campaigns and giveaways over the past few years. For cigarettes, it’s the only way to give people a discount. Since retail laws forbid real price competition, the best way to push your tobacco brand may just be to target the guy who was going to get the can of coffee anyway.

Poll: Only in Japan?
