It’s summertime here in Tokyo, and since we’re in the middle of the Obon holiday week a lot of Tokyoites have left town for the countryside, leaving a strangely empty city behind. Those who stick around or come in from the countryside pack just about every tourist spot to the gills. We went to a local wave pool today to catch some sun, and could barely move! Believe it or not, the picture below is of a pool…

…and not just any pool, but a wave pool! It was broken until 3:00, and when they announced it was starting again, the following craziness happened. If you get motion sickness easily, please do not watch this video. It’s now abundantly clear why toys like the Healing Theater Umine Projector are created…it’s best to keep the waves on your ceiling sometimes.
Update: As one commenter noted, it’s pretty funny how the pool in the upper left corner is completely empty. Of course, if you think this wave pool is full, you should have seen the lazy river outside!

i’m from japan.
To those who think this is any kind of fake, I can confirm that this is real. maybe it’s on first weekend of summer holidays… This kind of thing happens not only at this pupular swimming pool but also here and there, e.g. at beach, festival, amusement park, mt.fuji etc. etc… i’m japanese but i have never been to such a place, and think this type of people who would “enjoy” playing at the pool are really stupid.
japanese mentality is that you feel relieved to have many other people around you doing the same thing, rather than being alone. You want to act together, not alone. You want to be a part of the mass always.
This is stupid
First!
I want to swim in the pool in the summer of this year.
lol.
for those who say
“look how much pee is in the water”
or
“is this been photoshoped or has been photoshoped”
are pretty much idiots!!
it’s called “having FUN or going for a SWIM!”
and this pool does exist
you guys cant get past the fact
that this is how big it can get
up to as in people wise.
so stop your moaning and winening
and have FUN or cool down in
your local pool.
we dont see others commenting on your guys pool
so cut it out.!
Our laws would not alow this many peopel in a pool.
Holy S**t that place was so crowded. It would be hard to find anyone in here. WOW. Joseph Hennin:)
ditto joe… also it would be easy to drown… poor losers in the middle. WHOA WERID… stephanie h.
That would suck if that pool wasn’t purifyed, or people would swim in piss and s**t. Holy F**k.
LOL
Lmao

WTF Mate?
Very croudly. I don’t think it is comfortable.
This is the typical of Japan, there explain how small and tide the space is there. That is why they are trying to building a city inside of a skylight so tall and large where everything will be there restaurante shopping work etc…did you guys ever hurd about that? Yeah Tokyo is over, over, over populate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow…i never realized how biased the world was until i saw these commentz..evry 1z against everyone
as 4 the pool…evry1 on this page noz if they had the chance to get in that…hell ya they would! and there are pools like this evrywhere tokyo isnt the only place. Tokyo is kickass.
I have never senn a pool with that many people.
Whats the point of “swimming” in pool like that where you can’t move? :)
… jesus christ …
send me mor
If japan is supposed to have problems with chikan (those who molest girls on over crowded trains), imagine what takes place inside this pool.
forget about peeing in there…imagine if someone crapped? Or imagine trying to do a cannon ball and landing on some dudes head.
Just wondering is it any safe to be in such crowded place?
In Japan there´s these vacation halls because there´s so little coastline because it´s all built with buildings.
In Japan it´s not uncommon for people getting close contact in public place.
I bet it´s not very hygienic place at all :D
Ryan and Astrochicken you really should go out and see world! There´s much more reality outside your house than in your PC and Photoshop. Not every video you find in the Internet is fake. Also it´s not possible to manipulate video with still image software.
ps: I am also imaging professional so I know what software can be used to manipulate video. And that´s not Photoshop. Boujou, After Effects or SynthEyes yes but not Photoshop alone.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I wish i was there
!
maybe the reason why its empty in the back corner is beause it starts off shallow like a beach then it gets deeper so you can walk in..kind of.. lol
To the people saying this was edited… http://youtube.com/watch?v=inA-36YRV0Y they have a video. It would take tons of skill to edit that. It’s not fake. And the person who thought they were amazingly smart because “Japan is an island”. It’s a huge island. Plus, it doesn’t stop them from having pools.
You guys are SERIOUSLY overlooking something. The main reason this is more frequently happen in Japan is because of LIVING SPACE AND POPOULATION.
The US is like the 3rd largest county, so there is much much more living space. Therefore, the people would be accustomed to that. aint Japan like the size of California? The Japanese forced to accustom to small living space.
I’m getting tired of the anti-American comments. Japan is not some holy country w/ nothing wrong w/ it. They have their faults as well
First comment reads: “Americans would not be able to handle that kind of closeness. There would be fights. It is a testament to the manners in Japanese society.” You might want to try actually going into a few water parks in the usa some time. I’ve been in 3 wave pools on the east coast, just as crowded at the deeper end, nobody died, nobody threw a punch.
And that they there do everyone? ;)
like oh my gawd i like totally would never be able to do that. like seriously.
What happens when you want to get out?
I don’t think it is comfortable.
Holy moly that’s one heck of a pool party! People here are right… Half dangerous and half not because of the amount of people around you can help you but hey… No one can protect you from the horrible stench of urine and fecal matter. *Shrugs* This brings back horrible memories at the public pool when children….
Where is the exit and how do you get to exit, do you have to walk over everybodys heads??
Yo entiendo que de todo esto se derivan muchas cosas pero lo que anosotros nos trae como estudiantes, como trabajadores como personas de la tercera edad es que las rutas nuevas nos estan afectando mucho
Well its like the subway in Tokyo at rushhour: FULL.
HOLY SHIT! MAN! that is crazy packed and i don’t think that it is possible to even enjoy a day at the pool if it is that packed, looks like the japaneese need to chill and spoon less often:)
Suppose you’re in the middle, and you wanna wee-wee, how’re you going to get out? Must be kind of saltish in there :DD
Okay folks, I’ve been to this place.
It’s Summerland in Akikawa about 2 hours West of Tokyo.
I’ve been there when it was rammed but not as rammed as that. So it doesn’t surprise me this happened during Obon Holidays. That video is real.
I have no idea why people would cram into the wave pool when it’s that packed but Japanese have no problem with it.
I didn’t go in there. The lazy river is much better.
The water park is a cool place .
Just not during the holidays.

The pool at the top left is a splash pool for a slide so that’s why there is no one in it.
—-
The Wave pool is pretty shallow so probably why no one dies and there are a ton of lifeguards.
Also the kick everyone out after each wave session.
Add to that that everyone looks out for each other and people do take notice of other swimmers so if someone was in trouble they’d get help.
If you can’t believe that then you don’t get it.
—-
As for the pee.
WTF! Why do you people think people go and piss in Swimming pools? People go to the toilet for that.
And if people want to get out of the pool then people let them through.
And who craps in a pool?????

Urine is sterile, it’s already purified by your kidneys. The gross stuff (incl water content) comes out the other orifice.
And urine due to the content of urea can be used to sterilse wounds and has be done for ages and in various cultures.
So it’d wouldn’t become evil and infect you because it can be used to clean wounds.
The Romans actually used it to clean their teeth.
Also urine/ or more specifically the urea bit is used in a lot of beauty and skin cream products. So actually a lot of you are cleansing your face with artificially produced piss.
Go and research it if you don’t believe.
Oh and come on…the sea, fish pee in it! Stay out LOL!

The gross bacteria is more likely to come from sweaty people.
As for Japanese peeps, there are good things and bad things about their culture (as with cultures).
And I guess that the anti-American comments start flying after people from the USA open up by condescending other people’s cultures.
that is so crazy! it’s a fake…
NC… WEFP
Mommy look! a candy bar ><
In response to this comment:
“On the contrary, I think that if a child in the middle of the pool drowns everyone *would* know on time, lol. Hell, it’s probably one of the few bodies of water where no matter where you are, there are 8 people around you ready to assist you …”
I am a lifeguard, and let me just say, that wave pool is a lifeguard’s worst nightmare! With that many people in the pool, it is very easy for someone to slip underwater and get crushed by the crowd. It’s like a solid wall of people between the water and air- a small child could never force his or her way back to the surface. Just as well, if someone suddenly had an asthma attack, or a heart attack, or some other sort of medical emergency, it would be nearly impossible for the lifeguard to get to the person in time, unless they just crawled all over the crowd, ha. They really should limit how many people they put into that thing …
totally crazy….
I am so happy that I don’t have to live in Japan!!!
i love tokyo =P wat now dudes next year when i turn 25 im leaving to japan i already have da money so umm yaaaaa………………
¡¡ What asco !!
It’s like a giant bowl of fruity loops or something. Amazing. You could literally crowd surf.
Is that a Snickers bar i can see in there???
NO ITS A TWIX BAR, FOR SURE. YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heh, I do love reading the comments. I think a lot of people completely missed that this is a wave pool. You don’t swim in wave pools, you stand there and get thrown around into other people. Most wave pools are crowded, not THIS crowded, but to crowded to go swimming. It’s why I don’t go in them, I always ended up getting hurt in them.
Sterility of urine… is the same in the sense that everything from “inside” your body is sterile. For example, your blood is sterile to you because it’s already in your body. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain things or diseases that other people would like to get, esp viruses. And “inside” your body is opposed to your feces which is considered “outside” your body.
seriously that is definatly lol a bunch. How could so many people be in the wave pool. The first comment says u should have saw the river near it. i dont even want to know or look. :) :o
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was way cool. i cant bevlive that many people fit in it. there must be a trillon poeple in it!!! :) (wooosh blowing my nails) i just go my nails done. my mom didnt let me do this but i did it any way. if she finds out i am is big trouble. :-( anyway that isso silly why would they do that are they retarded or something. (texting) OMG!!!!!!!!! :O NO WAY oh my gosh! really :o OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . well i have to go peeps something happened omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gotta go :-) :) ;-) haha :-)
Lol, i bet the lifeguard can’t see if someone is drowning.
