Back in 2012, Yusuke Oono was one of the winners of the You Face contest with a palm-sized, fan-style 3D picture book.

Now Loftwork, the agency behind the original awards, has got together with publisher Seigensha to offer Oono’s design as two “360-degree” picture books.

One retells the fairy tale of Snow White as a beautiful 360-degree diorama. Open out the book like a fan; half green, half white. Apples, which make such an important appearance in the story, cut through the diorama in striking red.

The second book is a classic Japanese choice: Mount Fuji. The most famous mountain in Japan is recreated in blue and white, with a rising sun motif and flying cranes.

The best thing about the books is that this is not just a clever concept as a novel way to tell a story visually, the attention to detail is also superb — as the close-up images testify.
