The Baum Records is a baumkuchen (baum cake) of the type popular in Japan but with a major, and innovative, difference.

Created by the Takamatsu-based confectionary maker La Famille as a unique gift item, the spit cake resembles an vinyl record and has been launched commercially in Japan after a crowd-funding campaign.

Blending a dark chocolate and black cocoa taste with the buttery delights of galettes bretonnes, the cake becomes something else entirely when you open the free COCOAR2 iOS or Android app and watch the cake spin around in your phone screen like a record and play music and a message.

Integrating a service like this into the cake expands various possibilities for personalizing the item in terms of the music and message. Currently you can choose from eight types of “jacket” as well as different kinds of music for varying occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, and so on).

The cake, which comes with a lyrics card, costs from ¥1,800 to order.
